Not All Heroes Wear Capes

Whether in uniform or not, there are many unsung heroes in our lives. And on Saturday, May 16th in Vienna, VA - those heroes will be unsung no more!

Vienna Choral Society presents their final concert of the season. As is their tradition, it's a "Concert For A Cause". This year's concert will be done in partnership with the Vienna Volunteer Fire Department, the Vienna Police Department, and the 2015 World Police & Fire Games. (You can read more about these partners on the VCS blog.)

With so much bad news being broadcast, we love the idea of celebrating the heroes in our midst. The theme of this year's concert is "SOMEONE TO WATCH OVER ME: EVERYDAY HEROES".

The concert was planned almost two years in advance. And the timing couldn't be more perfect. As an example, Vienna's own Chief of the Vienna Volunteer Fire Department, John Morrison, is one of the volunteers helping with rescue efforts in Nepal.

Heroes come in all shapes and sizes. Many times you don't even know their names. But the actions they take change the world. I can think of a few heroes in my life. One grew up right under my own roof. She's a teacher now. An everyday hero.

#notallheroeswearcapes

Here's the Concert 411:

Date: Saturday, May 16

Time: 4:30PM

Place: Vienna Baptist Church (541 Marshall Rd SW)

Cost: $25/adults, $20/seniors (65+) and students (15 – 18), and free to youth (14 and below, and with a paying audience member).

Where To Buy Tickets: http://vcs-heroes.eventbrite.com/

Vienna is full of everyday heroes. Just another reason why THERE'S NO PLACE LIKE VIENNA!

Time To Take A Stroll!

Q. Do you know what these addresses have in common?
  • 225 Windover Avenue
  • 227 Windover Avenue
  • 261 Windover Avenue
  • 316 Windover Avenue
  • 440 Windover Avenue
  • 220 Walnut Lane
  • 342 Orchard Street
  • 318 Lewis Street
  • 340 West Street
  • 303 Knoll Street
  • 403 Windover Court
  • 407 Windover Court
A. All of these homes are in historic Windover Heights in Vienna. And if you decide to stroll through Windover Heights this Sunday, you will walk by these homes and more. Some are turn-of-the-century Victorians and Queen Annes. Some are original ramblers & cottages. Several are custom built in the past 20 years, some as recently as a few years ago.

Q. What else do they have in common?

A. All are homes with wonderful owners and homes where The Belt Team has represented the buyer or seller, sometimes more than once!

"The 41st Annual Walk On The Hill", sponsored by Historic Vienna, Inc. is this Sunday, April 26th from 2-5PM (rain date May 3rd). The streets will be blocked to cars, so it is a perfect family strolling day with lemonade stands and music and gardens to enjoy. There is usually live music at "the log cabin" in the gardens of the wonderful  old home at the corner of Windover & Walnut Lane.) Look for the "open" signs in front of the homes to signal that you are welcome to walk through the yard.

Enjoy! Perhaps we will see you there!

"The Walk on The Hill" and the community feel of our town are just more reasons why WE LOVE LIVING IN VIENNA!

Yeonas Park - Like The Old Fashioned "Back Fence"

As we have every year since 2002, The Belt Team is proud to sponsor Vienna Little League. Since today is Opening Day and it's Little League season once again, we thought we w'd re-run this post. Enjoy!
_______________________________

Yesterday was another one of those "I LOVE LIVING IN VIENNA" days! If you live in Vienna, you will eventually make your way to Yeonas Park. You either have children who play baseball or your children have friends who play baseball or you have friends whose children play baseball. It's just one of those inevitable things.

So yesterday, we went to see a neighbor's son play in a Vienna Little League game at Yeonas. As we entered the parking lot, it was teeming with activity. There was an air of excitement that wafted by - almost as strongly as the smell of chili dogs on the grill at the snack bar. Last Saturday was Opening Day (more than 1,100 people attended!) and this was the first week of the season. PLAY BALL!

And just like every April for the past 50+ years, the Vienna Little Leaguers took the field.

And just like every April for the past 50+ years, the Vienna parents assumed their perches from which to root.

And just like every April for the past 50+ years, the siblings gathered in the common area to play with one another.

Yeonas Field in Vienna is kind of what the back fence used to be "in the olden days". Back then, neighbors would hang their laundry out to dry in the backyard and catch up on gossip over the back fence. Or they would mow their lawns and tend their gardens, and take breaks to chat with the neighbor next door or behind them.

Well, that's just what happens at Yeonas Park. Last night, two of my girlfriends, who are normally so busy they can't see straight (they are AWESOME Moms!), settled in to the bleachers to watch the game and had themselves a nice two hour chat. The Dads like to hang out along the fences, and they are usually much more "into" the game. But don't be mistaken, there's a lot of chit chat going on there too. In a world where we are always "on the go", it's nice to have this respite.

And you ALWAYS run into people you know. It's just a fabulous gathering place where people of diverse interests and diverse backgrounds "hang out" together. I love seeing the many multi-generational families that come to the ballgames - babes in arms, grandparents in wheelchairs, and even teenagers who might be "too cool" to otherwise hang with their parents.

Just visit once and you'll see what I mean. Vienna Little League gets into your blood. Did you ever notice the "V" stickers on so many car windows in Vienna? They either say "Go Blue" or "Go Black". The stickers represent the two leagues in Vienna (National & American). And once you're a part of a certain league, you are Blue (or Black) FOREVER. Many of those cars you see with stickers have kids who are long past Little League age, but they are part of that family always.

AND we have a long history of winning. When you go to the park, you'll see the list of many State Championship wins and even a Regional Championship that sent our team to the Little League World Series in Williamsport. But it's not only about winning. It's the life lessons that are learned along the way - things like loyalty and hard work and how important it is to spend time with the ones you love.

I just LOVE living in Vienna!

Hearts of Gold in Vienna

There's a quote from Maya Angelou that goes like this:

"Remember, people will judge you by your actions, not your intentions. You may have a heart of gold -- but so does a hard-boiled egg."

Well, I am happy to say there are no bad eggs here. The people of Vienna have true hearts of gold.

How do I know?

Well, here's just another example.

Last week an urgent message came across my email from CHO. CHO is an ALL volunteer organization in Vienna that helps the poor in Vienna, Dunn Loring & Merrifield. (And yes - they unfortunately do exist right here in our midst.) They provide emergency financial assistance, meals on wheels, transportation, food, clothing and more.

Well - last Saturday was supposed to be CHO's annual toy shopping day for approximately 400 needy children. Five days before the event, CHO found out that the company who normally makes the biggest donation to support them each year would not be able to donate. Christmas was in jeopardy.

Out went an emergency notice to their ListServ and I posted it on my Facebook page.

Less than 24 hours later a little birdie told me that the problem was solved because of two big Vienna hearts.

One of my Facebook friends happens to be Sandy Booze, Office Manager for Sekas Homes. She saw my post, did some research & brought CHO's plight to the attention of another person with a great big heart - the owner of Sekas Homes, John Sekas.

John & his wife Darcy immediately reached out to CHO with an offer to make them whole and that same day CHO received a check. They are people of action, not just people of good intentions. And this is not the first time the Sekas Family has been so generous. In fact they have quite a reputation in the community for doing things like this.

Christmas for 139 families happened last Saturday thanks to John & Darcy Sekas and many hearts of gold in the Vienna community. Kudos to them and to the many volunteers at CHO.

If you would like to donate to this wonderful local Vienna organization, you can find details on how to donate to CHO here.

The Beatles, A Good Beat and a Great Buzz!

The Beatles

A Good Beat,

And a Great Buzz.

It's NOT what you think.

You can even bring the kids!

Cuz we're talking about the season opener of the Vienna Choral Society (VCS) with their "Coffee House Concert".

VCS is one of those "hidden secrets" of Vienna. The musical quality rivals anything you'll hear at Jammin Java, Wolftrap, The Barns or even The Kennedy Center!  And their sense of fun & sense of humor are unparalleled.

With four concerts scheduled between October & May, the new season kicks off with a coffeehouse concert. It's billed as "an eclectic evening of folk music and familiar tunes with a great caffeine buzz". We hear they'll be performing everything from The Beatles to Billy Joel to Cyndi Lauper and The Turtles. And no worries if your kids (or your parents) don't recognize the groups - they'll probably recognize the tunes from popular shows like "Glee", "American Idol" or even commercials!

As an added bonus, there will be nibbles from Whole Food AND coffee from Caffe Amouri. Who needs to go to Vienna Austria for great coffee, when we've got Caffe Amouri right here at home?!

The concert is on October 26th at 7:30. Tickets are $25 for adults, $20 for seniors & students (15-18), and kids 14 & under are free with a paying adult. You can buy tickets for Vienna Choral Society's Coffee House Concert here.

End of Summer Fun In Vienna

This weekend is Labor Day weekend. For many, this time of year signals "end of summer" and "back to school". (Show your sad face here.)

But we say - let's take summer out with a BANG! And if you live in Vienna - that's EASY!

SATURDAY:

Sing-A-Long Sound of Music

Head to Wolftrap & bring the whole family on Saturday, August 31st. Do you remember "Rocky Horror Picture Show"? It was the first audience participation movie "back in the day". Well, this weekend - you can share in that experience - except family style. (Rocky Horror wasn't quite family-style!).

The movie "Sound of Music" will be run on GIGANTIC screens both in house & on the lawn at Wolftrap. There will be a costume contest. The audience is invited to sing a long. AND your ticket will include a goodie bag of props. It's a fun, interactive event for all ages.

Here's a peek at what you can expect:

More Info about Sing-A-Long Sound of Music.

SUNDAY:

First Sunday Jazz Brunch at Bazin's on Church

Don't just treat your taste buds, but treat your ears as well at Bazin's First Sunday Jazz Brunch. Bazin's On Church (and that's Church Street - not a church building!) is one of our favorite Vienna restaurants. On the 1st Sunday of each month, they have live jazz music from Virginia Music Adventure's Chapel Square Combo. We say if you start your day off with a Pear & Cranberry Bellini & Bananas Foster French Toast - you just can't go wrong!

MONDAY:

W&OD Trail:

On Monday, it's time to work off all those treats from the weekend, get back in shape & get outdoors! The W&OD Trail goes right through Vienna. But which way will you ride (or skate or run or bike or stroll)? In one direction - you'll head toward Falls Church & Arlington. And in the other, you'll hit Herndon & (eventually) Purcellville. You never know what you might see along the trail, so keep your eyes wide open - not only is there gorgeous flora & fauna - but there is lots of wildlife along the way!

When you get home, put on Pandora, set it on The Beach Boys station. And BAM. You'll think summer is just beginning.

Happy Endless Summer!

A Princess In Vienna

Would you have the guts to do THIS??

Design & purchase a gorgeous $10,000 engagement ring. Fly to the Caribbean. Hire a boat captain to take you out to sea. Hide the ring under the ocean. Go back to your hotel. Wait til the next day. Invite your girlfriend to go snorkling. Wait for her to find the ring. And propose!

That's one of the stories that Lee Nguonly, owner of Princess Jewelers, shared with me yesterday. Isn't that just mindboggling?

You see, I stopped in to Princess to thank Lee again for designing two rings for me recently. Here's a photo of the rings. I wear them every single day.

One is my wedding ring. It's not big or flashy. But it means the world to me. This year my husband & I will celebrate our 30th Anniversary. We married when we were 21, just out of college and we did not have much money. But my husband scrimped & saved to get me a ring that had diamonds "all the way around". It was a surprise on our wedding day since we had picked out basic gold bands. I still remember crying when I saw the ring. And looking into his eyes and seeing how proud he was that he had pulled this off.

Over the years, the ring broke a few times. It was so delicate that it just wouldn't stay intact. Several times, I took it in to another jeweler in town. They fixed it, but eventually it would break again. So this time, I went to Princess.

Why had I not gone there in the first place? I'm not really sure. Location was not an issue. It's in an easy to access spot in the shops at The Village Green (at the corner of Maple Ave & Nutley St). But I think perhaps I was intimidated. There are not many stores in Vienna where you have to get buzzed in. And where there's a guard on duty. This isn't Manhattan after all. And I wasn't there to spend thousands of dollars.

BUT.

My ring symbolizes so much of what is important to me. And I was determined that someone could help me. So I ventured in and met Lee.

Lee treated me like I was a princess. Literally. He was so patient & very skilled at his craft. I had brought with me my broken wedding ring, as well as some other diamonds I had from my mother and from my grandmother's wedding ring. I had always wanted to do something with them, but they were not substantial and I had never had the courage to ask someone to look at them. Lee spent time talking to me and together we re-created my wedding ring. AND created a second ring. The wedding ring incorporated my mom's diamonds. And the heart incorporates the chips from my original wedding ring and my grandmother's ring.

Marriage and family are important to me. And these rings remind me of my priorities every single day. Thank you Lee for your role in that.

As Lee & I chatted yesterday, he shared several other stories. One of the boy who used to come shopping with his Mom. He wasn't even tall enough to see the pretty jewels under the glass counters. And he would just sit on the floor and read while she shopped. Many years later, this same "boy" would come in to buy an engagement ring. And he's now happily married. This is a story that repeats itself over and over. Princess Jewelers has been in Vienna for about 25 years; and they see many second generation shoppers there.

Lee also told me about the guy who bought a beautiful engagement ring and took his girlfriend to New York. They went to a park and decided to go horseback riding. He volunteered to go get things arranged and left her on a park bench. Only to return on horseback and clad from head to toe as a knight in shining armor! And you know the rest . . . he got down on one knee and asked for her hand.

Valentine's Day is coming up. So whether you are looking for a $25,000 custom heirloom piece of jewelry - or something so simple as getting that wedding ring repaired so you can wear it again, stop in to Princess Jewelers and say hi to Lee for me! He will make your wife, mother, girlfriend (or you!) feel like a princess too!

MAR MAR MARVELOUS!

Last Saturday was one of those days you just dream about. . . . where you wake up, you have no pressing business, and you think "Hmmm, maybe we should go out for a leisurely brunch." So that's just what we decided to do.

But where should we go? Since we live in Vienna, we like to stay local. But even confining our search to the Town of Vienna meant we still had a lot of choices. Should we head to Bazin's? Maplewood Grill? Amphora?  Breakfast burritos at Anita's? Patisseries & coffee at Silva's? Bagels at Panera?

All good options, but not this time. You see, every time we go to Panera, we peer across the street and into the windows at Maple Ave Restaurant and wish we had the time to sit down and have a really civilized meal. So that's what we did.

And boy are we glad we made that choice. A fabulous menu greeted us. At first glance, you might think the prices a bit high and the fare not that different from any other restaurant. But that's where you'd be wrong. Because every detail from the hand crafted cola, to the homemade mayo, to the French pressed coffee (a special brew from Caffe Amouri) to the gorgeous presentation was well worth it. We lingered and chatted and felt so thoroughly cared for that the rest of the day just went by in a dream. Seriously. It was THAT good.

I'm not a professional photographer, so my photos don't do justice, but here's what we enjoyed. My husband had the fried egg sandwich (with sliced Olli coppa, gruyere cheese, piquillo peppers) accompanied by killer home fries and a mustard vinaigrette salad. Mmmmmm!

I went the simple route with a panko crusted chicken sandwich with cheddar cheese & truffle mayo (that was to die for!) and seasoned fries. (If they had served an extra side of truffle mayo, I'd have dipped my fries for some extra goodness. But then they probably would have had to wheel me out!) This dish sounds simple, but the freshness of the organic ingredients, the seasoning and the execution made it simply spectacular.

Next time we go, we promised ourselves we would try the 6 course brunch tasting menu. It often includes an egg dish, a crepe, charcuterie, lunch plate, salad & dessert. It changes with the seasons, but based on my other meals there, I know it would be fabulous. AND they even have bottomless cocktails for $15 (mimosas, bloody marys & poinsettias). What's not to like?!

MAR (Maple Ave Restaurant) is MAR MAR MARVELOUS in my book and just another reason we we love living in Vienna. Here's to you Chef Tim Ma & General Manager Joey Hernandez. You guys rock!

Healthy Living in Vienna

On the morning of August 12, 2012, while reading the Washington Post, I saw a story featuring one of my neighbors, JoAnne Hammermaster.  Now, it isn’t always good to see your neighbor in the newspaper, especially in the Metro section, but this time it turned out to be a wonderful story highlighting an initiative to improve the nutritional quality of school lunches through an organization she helped found, Real Food For Kids (RFFK).

Before the meat additive “pink slime” became the focus of the media, JoAnne and her partners at Real Food For Kids were working to educate Fairfax County parents about the ingredients in food served in school cafeterias.  For example, a hamburger patty served in Fairfax County schools contained 26 ingredients, and the pizza and the cheese quesadilla each had over 70. This Fall, the hamburger will be replaced with a 100% beef burger and Fairfax County Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) says overall there has been an 80% reduction in food additives in the past year.

RFFK is working to bring fresh foods, locally grown fruits and vegetables, to our children’s schools.  One way to do that is by offering salad bars. Last year, 8 Fairfax County schools offered salad bars.  This year it will be 10.  RFFK encourages schools to contact FNS to request one.  Additionally, Marshall High School in Falls Church is beginning work on a pilot program that will enable them to make most foods from scratch starting in Fall 2013.

To continue its success, RFFK needs community support.  Here’s what you can do:
  • Sign the resolution for better school food through your PTA.
  • Ask Real Food For Kids to come to your school to tell parents about our initiative and support the resolution. Email contact@realfoodforkids.org to request a speaker at your next meeting.
  • Write to the school board. Let the school board know you believe this is an important issue. Go to the website fora sample letter (in English and Spanish).
  • Get involved! Real Food For Kids would love your help. Email  contact@realfoodforkids.org if you would like to speak with someone about opportunities to get involved.
  • Stay updated on the progress. Sign up for their newsletter! Email newsletter@realfoodforkids.org
Another really fun opportunity coming up is the 2012 Food Day hosted by Real Food For Kids.  It will be October 23rd at 6:00 p.m. at Marshall High School.  The theme is “Raising the Bar:  Feeding Academic Success”.   Local and national experts in food preparation, food policy and medicine will join together in a fun and educational experience with healthy foods.  I’ve also heard a celebrity chef will be on hand.  It is a free event and open to anyone in the community.

Real Food For Kids began when a group of Vienna parents came together to work toward the goal of increasing healthy food choices in Fairfax County schools.  Vienna residents who are making a difference locally and nationally are another reason I love living in our town.

Vienna Author Publishes Her First Book

If you were driving down Beulah Road in Vienna anytime during the last two weeks of July, you might have noticed hundreds of young witches and wizards making an appearance in the muggle world.  If you know what muggles are, then you may just know why they were there.  (Or maybe you read our blog post last year called "Not Your Mother's Summer Camp!")

For the second year, Vienna’s Church of the Holy Comforter held its vacation bible school based on J.K. Rowling’s popular book series exploring the adventures of Harry Potter and friends.  While the book series is the inspiration, the curriculum of the program was born right here in Vienna.

Leslie Barnhart,  a parishioner at the church, developed the curriculum for the bible school and with permission from Warner Brothers, opened the doors to Vienna’s  version of Hogwarts Castle in the summer of 2011.   After the completion of that first session, Leslie was inspired to write a book on the topic.  The Christian’s Guide to Harry Potter was published in July.

In the book, Leslie first explores some of the overarching themes of the book series and then dives into each book to highlight Christian themes and symbolism.  While I admit to loving English lit class in high school and college, the experience of reading this book, along with J.K. Rowling’s series is fascinating to me.  Like so many others, I’ve enjoyed the plot of the Harry Potter series but find myself re-experiencing it at a much deeper level through Leslie’s book.

The Christian’s Guide to Harry Potter by Leslie Barnhart is currently available in paperback and Kindle versions through Amazon.com.  Look for it in bookstores in September.  If you want to gain new insights into this wonderful series, you must pick it up!
Leslie has added her name to Vienna’s growing list of must-read authors (including David Baldacci, Ian Caldwell & Richard Kirkland just to name a few).  And interesting residents like these are just another reason why WE LOVE LIVING IN VIENNA!

For more information - visit Leslie Barnhart's web site.

There’s No Place Like Vienna . . . . or Magruders!

When I moved to Vienna, Virginia, I had no idea that I would have a constant reminder of my previous life from the  “other side of the river” (Maryland) and it would be . . . . a grocery store. A grocery store? Are you kidding me?  You’re going to wax poetic about a grocery store? The answer is, yes, I am.

If you are not a native Washingtonian, let me explain. Magruder's is a family owned store and has been “ a Washington tradition since 1875”.  Where I grew up, in Chevy Chase, Maryland, we lived near one of the first Magruder’s stores that ever opened in Washington and I was sent there seemingly daily for the  specials.  Make sure you get the freshest chicken”, “Don’t buy the fish if the eyes are cloudy” . This is what I was told on the way out the door.

The aisles were too small, the floors not pristine, and they didn’t have the great selection of junk food that the big chain stores had.  What it did have, and what they still have today, are, friendly employees, and great deals.

Best of all, for me, the location in Vienna is close to my house so I can re-live my youth - fighting for specials in those narrow aisles!

There’s no place like Vienna……or Magruder's!

You Too Can Hear U2!

Do you have a "bucket list"? I don't have one that's written down, but I do have a few ideas of things I'd like to eventually do or see. And the band U2 is DEFINITELY one of them.

Well - I'm not quite there yet, but I'm getting closer. And if this is something on your bucket list too, maybe you'd like to join me.

This Saturday (May 19th), the Vienna Choral Society is presenting a concert called "Seikilos to U2". The concert is being held to support arts education in Fairfax County & beyond and it will take place at 7:30PM at UUCF (2970 Hunter Mill Road in Oakton).

Vienna Choral Society is partnering with several organizations including One Voice, which is David Reynolds' organization (he is the way cool teacher at Vienna Elementary who leads the VES Jammers that VCS featured at the Celtic Arts Fest. You might also remember their Flash Mob at Viva Vienna last year).

There will also be a pre-concert talk given by Jennifer Rodgers Beach at 7PM. Families young & old are welcome. And seniors and children even get discounted tickets. (Details & tickets are available online or at the door.)

Here's what VCS had to say about the show:

"And yes, Seikilos to U2 is a huge span - 2000+ years of western music history in 90 odd minutes. Why? Because we are the Vienna Choral Society, and we can!"

Now seriously folks - you can't beat that. You too can hear U2!

Vienna Choral Society - just another reason why WE LOVE LIVING IN VIENNA!

EVERYONE LOVES VIENNA - BUT WHY???

This month, the Belt Family (that's my family) celebrates the 40th anniversary of our family moving to Vienna. Our parents, Gail & Jerry Belt moved us here from California as children. Now my brother Terry & I have raised our own children in Vienna. (Shhh - don't ask how old we really are!)

I'm not sure exactly what year the rest of The Belt Team arrived here in Vienna. But I know that like us, Kevin Kleifges arrived as a child, only to raise his sons here as well. Others on our team, like Pauline Knipe, Catharine Via, Susan Hussey and Mary Jane Perry arrived in Vienna as adults, but have also remained and raised families here. And our Client Care Manager, Tara Miller, thinks its the perfect place to raise her dog Casey!

All of us have lived here for years. And we continue to create so many memories here in the town that we call home. If you follow our blog regularly, then you already know that WE LOVE LIVING IN VIENNA, VA.

But here's the thing, we're not the only ones. This week we asked other folks to share why THEY love living here too. And we got some great answers - even some from people who WISHED they lived in Vienna!

Here's what they had to say:

Joseph Preston: "I can walk or bike to EVERYTHING in minutes. 2 major airports within half an hour. And yet there is a 30 acre park at the end of my street and deer are in the front yard every night, and the mayor answers her phone. What could be better?"

Laura Goyer: "I can walk to everything I need! I have friends who have become family. There are people here who have my back and will tell me if they see my kids stepping out."

Marion Serfass: "I can go to Giant in the middle of cooking something for that ingredient I forgot, the bike path, the Halloween parade in our front yard, the schools, the people, and whatever everyone else said! For a parent who works outside the house, the ability to get all my errands done quickly because everything you need is right here."

Valerie Taylor: ""The Halloween Parade, Octoberfest, the bike path, Water's field, Marshall/Madison games, Viva Vienna (ok for the kids), breakfast at the Virginian, of course the INN and save the best for last - Dunn Loring Swim Club and Friday cornhole league!!

Kathy Thiringer: "I love it when I ask my kids if THEY mind growing up in the same town all their lives (I moved around a lot) and they say that they love Vienna, always seeing people they know, feeling safe. Along with the "eyes" of friends, I, too, know that if they ever needed help, someone would step in to help them (like the guy who called 911 when Stephen took a header off his bike near the caboose)."

Elizabeth DiFrancisco: "I love (most of the time) being able to go ANYWHERE in Vienna and seeing people I know. I love that I have 5000 eyes around town keeping the Village Eye on my kids and helping to keep them safe. (or letting me know when I need to step in)."

Ellen Schaad: "I used to be within easy walking distance of Pie Gourmet!"

Teresa Schultz: "Very little crime due to our fine police force."

John Schultz: "As long as you don't count me forgetting to take the trash out a crime."

Tara MacCall: "The community spirit-the people, the schools-everything I need is within two miles, the Community Center-the parks-the Vienna Inn-the fact the checkout person at my grocery store knows me and my kids. And believe it or not, I love the trees, just not as much in the fall."

Colleen Geiger: "From someone who lives on the outskirts but with a Vienna address . . . it just feels like our hometown. Once there it's easy to hit every stop on the to do list and you have a good chance to stop for coffee with a friend along the way."

Lynn Kelliher: "Loved growing up here. Loved raising my kids here."

Colleen Geiger: "Oh and the boys loved it when they were old enough to take the bike trail in to town and walk around and go out to lunch. A safe place to let them feel their independence."

Tara MacCall: "Living in Vienna means going to a high school JV basketball game where the referee congratulated my daughter on a great game and making the JV team-he hugged me-since he has been reffing her games since she was in 4th grade. "

Marie Gadell: "I agree with every comment made! I love being able to walk to shops, restaurants, activities (Viva Vienna), and friends. I love that so many friends are watching out for my kids and I theirs. Running into friends all over Vienna. Even if you don't know them personally, there is always a kind smile."

Joseph Preston: "To add to what Marie said, there is a "town" feel here that I have not experienced anywhere else - Fairfax, Leesburg, Springfield just to name a few. We have lived at our current address a bit over two years and we have a t least met everyone for a radius of a block or so around us. We know our neighbors, they know us, we watch their houses, they watch ours, and it's a real neighborhood. Vienna seems to be more like that than anywhere in the area that I know of."

If this sounds like the place you'd like to live, contact The Belt Team. It would be a pleasure to help make your dreams come true!

The "Secret" Side of Vienna, VA (Shhh Don't Tell Anyone!)

Did you know that Vienna has a "secret side"?

Well, it's really not so secret - if you know where to look!

We can't share ALL our secrets (after all, then they wouldn't be secrets any more!), but here are a few to get you going. And feel free to share your Vienna secrets below!

1. "SECRET SHOWS"!

Recently, I went to a "secret concert" at one of my favorite music venues - Jammin Java. If you've never been there, you're really missing something special. As one of the band members said that night, "The rumor that this is a coffee house is out the window!". You might think by its name (including the word "Java") that it's a coffee house. They do have coffee (along with a full bar and great food). But you'd be missing the "Jammin" part. And boy was it jammin last time I was there!

And that brings me back to the "secret" part. I follow Mei, the "Jammin Java Door Gal" on Twitter. And one night, lo and behold, a tweet came out saying there would be a "secret concert" the following night. If you recall, Taylor Swift was recently in town and Need To Breathe, the band that had opened for her at the Verizon Center, was going to "secretly" appear at Jammin Java for their own concert. Needless to say, the secret spread quickly. Not so secret anymore. And tickets that went on sale at 10PM were sold out by 5AM the next morning - the fastest this band has ever sold out.

I can't tell you how much fun it was. The band had a blast and their joy was contagious. You could tell how much they appreciated "jammin" together in such a small venue after traveling the country in big venues like the Verizon Center. It was truly a magical night.

And this isn't the first time Jammin Java has had a "secret show". If you have teenage daughters (or "tweeners"), you might recognize the name Nick Jonas. So who performed "secretly" at Jammin Java back in February - the day before he performed at The White House? Yup - you got it - Nick Jonas.

2. "SECRET MENU ITEMS"

One of our favorite Vienna restaurants is Maple Avenue Restaurant - MAR for short. (For you "old-timers" - it's where the "old Anita's" used to be, for you "newcomers" - it's across the street from Panera). MAR offers a super intimate, fun dining experience. (You can read a review here.) Their menu changes frequently, but it's always fresh & inventive.

Now comes the "secret" part. If you follow MAR on Facebook or Twitter, they sometimes announce "secret menu items". The servers will not mention them as specials when they bring your menu, but if you tell them you saw it on Facebook or Twitter, then you get a sweet opportunity to sample something extra special. Sometimes it's items that are being demo'd. Sometimes it's because they only have a small quantity of something. But it's always yummy. We liked the baked mac special one night. I know that doesn't sound exciting - but boy was it good! Chef Tim Ma has a way of taking something you might think of as pedestrian and turning it into a culinary masterpiece. (He also has a hilarious sense of humor with comments on Twitter like "Did we get pulled over on our scooter by vienna police? Yes. Was it because they were bored? yes. Was it embarassing, absolutely." and "MAR will close early tonight, staff will be taking pickleback shots, then heading over to the potato sack slide at #vivavienna. don't judge.")

Other local restaurants & eateries let you in on the "secret" when they have new menu items or when they are about to take items off the menu so you can get them one last time before they disappear.

3. "SECRET DISCOUNTS"

In today's economy, who doesn't want a discount? Well, a lot of Vienna's local businesses are turning to social media to spread the word about their products and services. It's no or low cost advertising for them. AND, if you pay attention - you can take advantage of the "secret discounts" they often offer. Here are some examples we've made the most of (note - these are not current discounts - most of these "secrets" are for one day only and sometimes just for a few hours).

Caffe Amouri - "50 cents off iced drinks"

Pure Pasty - "Buy a chicken marsala pasty and get a 2nd one for $1"

Whole Foods Vienna - "After you get your chicken breasts for only $3.99/lb head to customer service and say "I'm not chicken, but I'm all natural". You'll get a delicious bottle of marinade on the house."

Sweetleaf Cafe - Get an extra veggie topping on a salad "created by you" for free.

(If all this sounds too complicated, just follow The Belt Team on Twitter. We tend to "retweet" all kinds of great info about Vienna, because as you know, WE LOVE LIVING IN VIENNA and THERES NO PLACE LIKE VIENNA (Dot Com!) (And for Vienna real estate "secrets", you can follow us on our blog or find us on Facebook.)

There are lots more things to find on Vienna's "Secret Side" - but some things just have to stay secret! What are you favorite secrets about Vienna?

Not Your Mother's Summer Camp

Summer camp in Vienna ain't what it used to be - and we think that's a GOOD thing!

Check out what Guest Blogger Susan Hussey shared with us about some of the camp happenings in Vienna last week. They might make you wish you were young again! (Susan is a member of The Belt Team and Mom to Grace (age 7) and Matthew (age 6).)
_________________________________________________

There can be no doubt . . . The Belt Team loves Vienna. The answer to what makes Vienna so special often lies with the families and events that shape our lives here. Here's an example:

Last week, many of Vienna’s children had the opportunity to learn and have fun at two truly unique summer camps.

Westbriar Elementary School's PTA hosted "Camp Invention" again this year. Camp Invention is designed to spark creativity and give kids a unique hands-on experience building and creating their own inventions. The kids brought items from home to inspire their creativity. I’ve heard they explored and recycled everything from alarm clocks to satellite dishes!

Another unique camp opportunity for Vienna children last week (including my children Matthew & Grace) was Holy Comforter’s Vacation Bible School. The theme this year was "Christian themes in the Harry Potter novels". Children explored JK Rowling’s engaging plots from a deeper perspective and had lots of fun in the process. Here, students arrive by “Hogwarts Express”.

In very broad terms, the plot of the Harry Potter novels can be described as a young boy's transition from ordinary . . . to someone who is mature, learned and extraordinary. Exceptional teachers and mentors help him all along the way.

Activities included everything from games of Quidditch - to Care of Godly Creatures - to feasts in the Great Hall! About 155 children took part as "students", in addition to 25 youth who acted as "prefects" and 10 adult "professors". (Pictured here are Grace and Matthew with Hagrid, Professor of Godly Creatures!).

Last week in Vienna, our children experienced the “magic” of growth under the guidance of exceptional volunteers at these two camps. If you missed it this year, mark your calendars now to check them out next summer!

7 Things To Do In Vienna, VA To Celebrate Memorial Day!

This weekend, we mark another Memorial Day. Who will you be remembering?

On May 2, 2000 - the White House put out a statement that said "As Memorial Day approaches, it is time to pause and consider the true meaning of this holiday. Memorial Day represents one day of national awareness and reverence, honoring those Americans who died while defending our Nation and its values. While we should honor these heroes every day for the profound contribution they have made to securing our Nation's freedom, we should honor them especially on Memorial Day."

Here are a few ideas for things to do in Vienna this Memorial Day weekend:

1. "The President's Own" (the United States Marine Band) will be playing a FREE concert at Wolftrap on Sunday, May 29th. The concert will be followed by fireworks. Gates open at 6:30PM, show at 8PM, fireworks at approximately 9:30PM.

2. Meet & greet the folks who stay in & around the Vienna area when they come for Rolling Thunder. It's not hard to miss them - just look for the big groups of Harley Davidson riders. These veterans of the Vietnam War convene for a demonstration each year to urge the government to account for all MIA's and POW's and also ride to show their love & respect for veterans and soldiers of all wars. If you want to actually see the "RIDE" on Sunday (it's a very moving sight), the best spots are along the Memorial Bridge & Constitution Avenue.

3. Enjoy the Memorial Day Tribute at Viva Vienna. Viva Vienna is a huge festival that takes place in Vienna each year (rides, vendors, food, entertainment & more!). In the midst of the festival on Monday, stop by the Vienna Town Green for a Memorial Day tribute - FREE - 3 to 4PM.

(PLUS - Rumour has it that something really unique & special will be happening at the corner of Church Street and Center Street right around 3PM on Monday - you won't want to miss it. It will definitely make you smile!)

4. Call your grandpa, mom, brother, aunt, friend - whomever you know is serving or has served our country and tell them THANK YOU!

5. The Soundry's "Viva La Carnage" - May 28th at 8PM at The Soundry in Vienna. One of the freedoms we celebrate in the United States is the freedom of speech. Some might call it the freedom of expression. And "Viva La Carnage" is all about expression. Here's what the web site says: "The Soundry turns its entire space inside and out into performance space while vendors strut their stuff amidst a frenzy of creative freedom. Spontaneous collaborations! Art! Music! Dancing! Burlesque! Improv! Poetry! Performance Art! Outdoor delights!"

6. Stop in at one of Vienna's many churches to attend a service or say a prayer for peace & for protection of our armed forces. There are too many churches in Vienna to list them all, but here are a few options - St. Mark Catholic Church, Vienna Presbyterian Church, First Baptist Church of Vienna, Church of the Holy Comforter, Wesley United Methodist Church, Vienna Baptist Church, Our Lady of Good Counsel.

7. Lastly, what's more "All-American" than baseball? (You know how we love baseball here at Theres No Place Like Vienna (Dot Com!)! There are some great games going on in Vienna this weekend. Stop by Waters Field during the weekend to see Vienna Babe Ruth's Senior League games. Or stop by James Madison High School tonight (May 27th) at 7PM to see Madison take on last year's VA State Champion, West Springfield HS.

There are LOTS of other great ways to celebrate Memorial Day in the Washington DC area. But whatever you do, make sure you remember why we mark this day.

Happy Memorial Day!

Byrds in The Barns - Is That Like "Bats In The Belfry"?

Well, it was definitely a wild n crazy kind of night at The Barns last night, but let me explain:

FIRST, THE HISTORY - What is "The Barns"?

Right here in small town Vienna, we have one of the premier music venues in the country - America's National Park For The Performing Arts. The initial 53 acres of land for this park was originally purchased (and later donated) by Catherine Shouse for $5,300 (don’t you wish you could buy land around here for $100 an acre!) and she named the farm “Wolf Trap Farm”. From late May to early September each year, people enjoy the outdoor amphitheatre known as The Filene Center. (People like us who have grown up here just call this “Wolftrap”.) The Filene Center seats about 7,000 people. The Barns, on the other hand, is an intimate facility that probably seats less than 400 people. It is made up of two 18th century barns that were restored & rebuilt using only 18th century methods with hand -hewn beams & panels. It’s simply gorgeous and the acoustics are phenomenal. And that brings me to last night.

BANDHOUSE GIGS BRINGS THE BYRDS TO THE BARNS

Last night, Bandhouse Gigs gathered a bevy of the area's best musicians to put on a sold-out "Tribute To The Byrds". The entire night featured music that was either written by or played by the legendary group The Byrds. Since their music spanned a number of genres (including folk, rock n roll, psychedelic & country) - it was quite an eclectic evening. And that fit this kind of adventure just perfectly.

Throughout the night, the musicians mixed and matched. Some of the songs were performed by groups in their entirety - and sometimes the stage was filled with musicians from 7 different groups at a time. All told, there were 45 different singers/musicians on stage - each one a legend in his/her own name. Yes, this group included Grammy Award winners, Emmy Award nominees, WAMMY Award winners & more. And they played guitar, piano, harmonica, accordion, ukelele, 12-strings, bass, steel guitar, violin, trumpet, fiddle. You name it -they had it covered. It was like a local Music Hall of Fame.

Watching the night play out, I felt almost like I had been invited to the musicians' own private party - for they enjoyed playing & watching almost as much as we did. You see, despite the fact that these musicians are all at the top of their game - most of them never get to see or hear each other perform - because they've got their own gigs to play. So throughout the night, we saw musicians in the wings or hiding in the back of the room - peeking out to see who had the angelic voice, who was ticking the ivories so sweetly and who just played that rockin 12 string guitar solo.

Although the musicians obviously prepared on their own prior to the show, there were only 2 rehearsals of the full group. And of all the songs played, only 2 were ever played by a group prior to this event. This meant that the evening was rather "loose", but it added to the intimacy of the night and truly highlighted what artists they were. Each of the folks performing was a consummate professional. And so at one point, when technical difficulties intervened, "Cowboy Cal" was fully prepared with stand-up comedy. And the audience ate it up.

There were several highlights of the show. One was the song that closed out the first half. It featured Jon Carroll on piano and was a revival-style version of a song The Byrds sang called "Jesus Is Just Allright With Me" (you might remember it as a Doobie Brothers song, but apparently The Byrds sang it prior to that). With Jon on one side of the stage - tickling those ivories into a frenzy . . . and a slew of singers on the other side gathered around one microphone & throwing their hands in the air . . . it felt almost like I was in church (except that I was in a barn - but isn't that where those old revivals used to take place?).

The other highlight was near the end of the show when Eric Brace (of Last Train Home) came on stage and sang "Ballad of Easy Rider" and "This Wheel's On Fire". Although the level of performance was high all night, when Eric took the stage it was apparent why his music career has expanded well beyond the DC region. (Eric Brace used to be the lead columnist for the Weekend section of The Washington Post. His band Last Train Home mostly played locally. But a number of years ago, he gave up his "day job" to take his music career full throttle and he now tours nationally and internationally.) Eric's ability to storytell captures an audience - whether he is talking, writing or singing. He has an incredible charisma and his voice is powerful and unique. And when he teams up with Bill Williams, the vocal harmonies are magic. (On a side note - Bill Williams played on 13 different songs last night. What a talent - singing, playing, harmony arranging AND he made the best male fashion statement of the night with some incredible shoes/boots. Best female fashion statement belonged to Ellen Cherry with her psychedelic tights.)

The show was closed by John Jennings and his band playing "Eight Miles High". And they rocked it. It was an incredible evening. For $25, we got to see 45 of the area's best musicians & singers. Not only will I go see anything Bandhouse Gigs puts together (previously they have done tributes to Neil Young, Nils Lofgren, Bob Dylan, Nick Lowe, Joni Mitchell, Warren Zevon & Allen Toussaint - and rumor has it Rod Stewart may be next), but I defintely made note of many artists I want to see again so I can hear them play their own music. Such talent, such passion. WOW.

And the best part? I live in Vienna - so while most of the musicians and guests had a long drive home (people came from Springfield, Silver Spring, Burke & Baltimore) - I was home & tucked in bed 10 minutes after the show ended.

I LOVE LIVING IN VIENNA!

Trivia Note: Elizabeth Taylor was a Director Emeritus for Wolftrap. I had forgotten about that until I saw this poster last night.

Final Note: I wasn't able to capture all the names of the performers/groups, but here is a partial list:

John Carroll, Eric Brace, The Lofgren Brothers, Jelly Roll Mortals, Naked Blue, Ruthie & The Wranglers, Purple Umbrella, Forty Dollar Fine, Bill Williams, John Jennings, Dave Chappell, Scott McKnight, David Kitchen, Ellen Cherry, Todd Wright, Cal Everett, Bill Baker, Janet Emma Garbe, Mike Clem, Jen Smith, Derrick Brock, Scott Smith, Ronnie Smith, Helen Hausmann, Jim Clatterbuck, Steve Hall, Andy Rutherford, Spencer Hoopes, Dave Egelhofer, Ronnie Newmyer, Chuck Sullivan, Carey Creed, Harry Traynham, Justine Miller, Louie Newmyer & Robbie Magruder

NO MORE MEAT & POTATOES!

If you're a "foodie" like I am, then Vienna, VA is DEFINITELY the place for you! Who needs to travel to New York or Paris or Rome when you've got such an array of restaurants here at home?

A few weeks ago, we finally got a chance to try Maple Avenue Restaurant (MAR). (For you "old-time Vienna-ites" - it's in the location where "the original Vienna Anita's" used to be - just across Maple Avenue from Magruder's).

We've been wanting to try MAR for a while, but just haven't had the time. We've been following them on Facebook and the specials they post always sound yummy. And boy was it worth the wait!

The night we chose for our first visit was Valentine's Day - probably not the ideal day to try a new place - but nevertheless, that's what we did. I was worried that on such a busy night, the service might be lacking. But thankfully I had nothing to worry about. It was great. I can only imagine on a "regular" night, that it must just be stellar!

The atmosphere of the restaurant is sleek & modern. Some might call it stark, but I like the floor-to-ceiling windows and the elegant simplicity. And there is nothing simple about the food. THIS is where MAR excels. They describe their cuisine as "eclectic American Cuisine in the heart of Vienna, Virginia blending American with Asian, Latin American, French flavors and techniques."

Normally they have a very reasonable menu with "small plates", "main plates" and "dessert plates" - kind of a tapas-style thing - with all kinds of delightful sounding bites. (I'd give you a list of some sample dishes, but they change the menu frequently based on what's fresh.) Since it was Valentine's Day, the menu was prix-fixe and a little pricey. So, would the food live up to our expectations?

Well, we enjoyed four courses and each one was better than the last. Here's what we had:
  • Jicama and Granny Smith Apple Salad (with a ginger lime vinaigrette)
  • Saffron Coconut Milk Mussels
  • Argentinean Sausage with Housemade Chimichurri Sauce (on a bed of frisee)
  • Panko Lollipop Lamb Chops & Creme Fraiche Mashed Potatoes
The courses may sound simple, but the flavors were complex and perfectly melded together. Definitely not your "same old - same old"! It was truly a symphony of food, where each course built upon the one before - until you reached the highlight of the meal.

Did we have room for dessert? Well, at least one of us did - but to tell you the truth, I can't even remember what it was. I think we were in a coma of happiness by then!

We will DEFINITELY go back to MAR . . . because based on what we tasted, we'd like to try ANYTHING Chef Tim Ma wants to make. (And this includes my "meat & potatoes" husband!)

PS - Maple Avenue Restauarnt also has a "food truck" that makes the rounds sometimes in the Vienna - McLean area. If you follow them on Facebook, you'll see when they take the truck out & where it will be. AND you'll see the specials posted. (For example, on Thursday it said "sweetbreads are here" and "Soup: roasted piquillo pepper served with Firefly Farms goat cheese and parsley. Wine: $5.00 chardonnay, shiraz and godiva white chocolate coffee. Sweet plate: apple pistachio pie served with salted caramel sauce."

Sounds tempting, doesn't it?!

Fabulous food . . . just another reason why WE LOVE LIVING IN VIENNA, VA!
